Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men. However, despite being descended from a long line of Wardens, 16-year-old Errol Magnus believes it to be the absolute worst job on the planet How could a single occupation simultaneously be the most boring, abominably stupid and extraordinarily dangerous profession imaginable?

But when his older brother Tom - the current Warden for their region - goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands, where monsters abide in mind-boggling numbers, to find him. During his search, Errol crosses paths with - and finds himself stalked by - the legendary Wendigo, a monster with preternatural strength and speed, as well as enhanced senses of sight, smell and hearing…and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Now Errol must do the impossible and not only escape from the monster (something no one has ever done before), but also avoid the unearthly legacy it leaves on all its victims - a terrifying curse known as Wendigo Fever.

Okay, be warned--if you're anything like me, I don't always remember to check the number of pages. This is almost a short-story, not a book. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it had 115 pages or so.

It's also hard to get real characterization in that short a work, or to have meaningful personal growth, imo. That being said, I like the author, and he did a decent job with a fairly short work. If you're like me, and like to sink your teeth into a book, then this probably isn't for you. However, please allow me recommend Mr. Hardman's other work currently on Amazon--Sensation: A Superhero Novel. It's about double the length of this one. Link provided below (assuming links work on Amazon, I haven't tried a link in a review). Strong characterization . . . a touch predictable, but overall a solid effort. I havent' done a review of that one (yet), but I'll certainly recommend it here.

I think Mr. Hardman is still a novice writer, but he's showing real promise. I will certainly consider another of his books. If you don't mind a shorter work, you'll probably enjoy Warden as well.

Good luck, Mr. Hardman--I hope you keep writing, sir!

Warden Book 1 Wendigo Fever eBook Kevin Hardman Reviews

I picked this up to read as I sat waiting in a doctors office. I kept reading later over coffee. Delightful story of a young man coming to terms with his life. The characters are vibrant against the backdrop of a twisted future world.
Wasn't sure what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. Great characters, good story line. A good read and I will be disappointed if there isn't another book. Will be looking for more from this author.
This a good short story to read . the action is continuous but paced. The beginning set up for the story is a bit slow, but the book picks up and maintains a good story line with a satisfying ending. I feel it could have made a good read over a much longer book.
Hardman writes some entertaining fiction, and if you haven't read his Kid Sensation books you should give them a shot. This newer series is quite good, and it features a unique world and a cast of characters that I found to be a lot of fun. It's a quick read, but worth the price and then some. I won't spoil it for you, but he manages to blend modern urban fantasy elements with fantasy fiction and dystopia in a very interesting way. Check it out if you like any of those genres.
The first book has to get us up to speed quickly, and it does just that. It also manages to entertain, and to provide great action and story. Recommended!
Really liked this book. For a story that is fairly short it has a lot going for it. The Junior Warden has to grow up quickly and take on responsibilities against a very powerful Creature. I use Unlimited so the price for the book did not bother me. I will continue to read these as long as the stay on Unlimited or would pay for them if he makes them into longer books.
I'm glad I bought this book. I only had one complaint.
The book should have been longer. There were plenty of times when the author could have added character building dialogue that would have mad me care more about the main character and (I assume) the love interest. Additionally, the three main side characters (besides the brother) didn't have enough scenes, either.
****** SPOILERS ******
The zombie appears, presents exposition, takes some salt, and then leaves, never to be heard from again. Maybe he'll appear in other books, but when you introduce a fairly important character like this, you kind of want your readers to get to know him. if it had been me, I would have made him a member of the party.
The captive was used as a device to make the wendigo seem even more terrible. This was the right idea, but it would have worked better if I cared more about the character. If he had been somewhat helpful in other situations and we had learned about him more through dialogue rather than just a lump paragraph explaining his story, his fate would have been that much more appalling.
The wizard was random. He gets two scenes, but they aren't enough to make his betrayal that surprising or interesting. It feels like he shows up after the action, makes some magic weapons, and then gets defeated. How he is defeated is cool, but it would have been so much better if I cared more.
****** SPOILERS OVER *******
However, the book was fun. I would much rather it be short and interesting, than bloated and boring. I'm going to buy the next book.
